Building
The Building Division reviews permit applications and building plans, issues building permits, and conducts building inspections to help ensure that construction within the unincorporated area of San Mateo County meets current building codes and standards and County regulations.
Current Planning
The Current Planning Division processes permits for land use and development projects in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County, in compliance with the County General Plan, Local Coastal Program, Zoning/Subdivision Regulations, and State and County environmental statutes. Current Planning staff receive and review plans and permit applications, and provide the public with information about zoning, land use, environmental regulations, and best management practices in order to facilitate the permitting process, improve the quality of future development, and enhance neighborhood quality. Current Planning also provides project coordination, research and analysis, and reports and recommendations regarding proposed development to numerous boards, commissions, and committees.
Long Range Planning
The Long Range Planning Division is responsible for preparing community development and land use policies, as well as preparing ordinance updates. General Plan updates, Community Plans, and Mobility Plans are some of the frequent policy areas that the division is involved in.
Code Compliance
The Code Compliance Division enforces zoning, building, and other land use regulation compliance throughout the unincorporated area of San Mateo County.
Administration
The Administration and Support Program offers direction and support to all programs within the Department. This Program provides fiscal oversight, procurement and contracts management, payroll processing, personnel administration, budget development and monitoring, formatting and graphics, Information Technology (IT), and Geographical Information Services (GIS).
