Business Licenses are issued only for certain businesses located in unincorporated San Mateo County. All Business License Applications are reviewed and approved by the County’s Business License Board with the Planning and Building.  

There is a $50.00 non-refundable fee for Business License Applications.

Before submitting your application and application fee, applicants may contact the Planning Division at 650-363-1825 or at planningprojects@smcgov.org or contact the Tax Collector’s Office at 866-220-0308, to determine whether a Business License is required.

Please note that additional fees may apply for the actual license or event, depending on the type of business or activity. These fees will be collected before the application is issued.

New Business /Building and Planning Counter Inquiries

Individuals inquiring about a new business at the Planning Counter must complete the New Business Zoning Conformance Review Form.  This form will assist the Planning Counter in determining whether a Business License is required.
