On August 17 San Mateo County opened the new Don Horsley Park at Tunitas Creek Beach, a mile-long stretch of sand and surf that's ideal for beach play. However, the water can be cold, dangerous, and unpredictable. There is no lifeguard on duty at the beach so please take precautions to ensure your visit to the shore is fun and safe.
- Never turn your back on the ocean. Water conditions can change rapidly and even calm-looking water can hide strong currents. Watch for surges, known as “sneaker” waves, which can suddenly overtake you.
- Keep your distance. The ocean can pull in someone who is standing in the surf up to their knees. If you are not a strong swimmer it’s recommended that you don’t enter the surf above your ankles. Always keep children close and outfit them with life vests if they are going to be in or near the water.
- Remain aware of potential rip currents. Most seaside rescues require saving victims who become caught in these strong channels of water, which flow away from shore and out past the breaking waves. If you find yourself in a rip current, remain calm. Don’t swim against the current; swim out of it in a direction parallel to the shoreline, then swim towards shore.
When it comes to the ocean, you will never be sorry you erred on the side of caution. If in doubt, don’t go out!
Bring Drinking Water
Also note that Don Horsley Park at Tunitas Creek Beach does not have drinking fountains or other sources of running water. Please prepare for your visit by bringing adequate drinking water.
