Emma Gonzalez serves as Interim Director of the San Mateo County Parks Department, where she leads one of the Bay Area’s largest regional park systems, serving nearly three million visitors annually across more than 16,000 acres of parks, trails, beaches, and natural preserves.
With more than 40 years of County service, Gonzalez brings extensive experience in public service, community engagement, strategic communications, and cross-departmental leadership. Prior to joining Parks, she served as Chief and Director of Community Affairs and Programming in the County Executive’s Office, where she led complex countywide initiatives and built strong partnerships with local and state officials, community organizations, and philanthropic partners.
Known for her collaborative leadership style and ability to build trusted relationships, Gonzalez has a strong track record of bringing people together to advance initiatives that improve the quality of life for San Mateo County residents.
As Interim Parks Director, Gonzalez is focused on strengthening partnerships, advancing capital improvements, promoting environmental stewardship, and ensuring County parks remain welcoming, accessible, and sustainable spaces that support wellness, resilience, and community connection for residents and visitors alike.
Gonzalez holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration and remains committed to preserving and enhancing the County's parks, trails, beaches, and open spaces for current and future generations.
