CAL FIRE CZU will be performing fuel reduction work in the Saddle Area of San Bruno Mountain Park, complementing work San Mateo County Parks previously performed there to increase ecosystem health and reduce fire danger to neighboring communities. The project has been identified in the San Mateo County Parks Wildfire Mitigation Plan and is slated to occur before May 2026.
Work will include removing and chipping dead and fallen trees; removing some live trees that are less than 17 inches in diameter; and trimming existing trees, brush, and ladder fuels. Trimming and removal will be performed by hand and a chipper will be used to dispose of woody debris where access allows. In areas inaccessible with a chipper debris may be lopped and scattered to CAL FIRE standards. Fuel reduction is critical to slowing the spread of potential wildfire, safeguarding lives and property, and restoring resiliency to the ecosystem of San Bruno Mountain.
Residents near the work area should expect increased noise and dust while this work is being performed. Start dates and possible trail closures will be announced on the San Bruno Mountain Park page on the San Mateo County Parks web site.
