Construction has begun on St. Leo's apartments, a 15-unit building for families with very low to extremely low incomes located on Marlborough Avenue in North Fair Oaks.

The St. Francis Center is developing the apartments with the help of a $1 million grant from the San Mateo County Department of Housing. The funds are from Measure A, the countywide half-cent sales tax.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the project on Nov. 17, 2015, to help provide additional housing for residents with low incomes.

The St. Francis Center helps families with dignity and become self-supporting members of the community. The center provides housing, food and clothing services and two community gardens. It also operates the Siena Youth Center.

St. Leo's will offer seven 3-bedroom units, seven 2-bedroom units and one studio along with a community room and study rooms. A separate $30,000 grant of Measure A funds approved by the Board will help the St. Francis Center furnish the community and study rooms (link to agenda -- see item 13).
