Redwood City – The County of San Mateo continues to work to protect public health and safety in response to the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19.

The County of San Mateo’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains open to coordinate countywide response and communications in response to the situation. The EOC’s Joint Information Center will provide daily status reports Monday through Friday until further notice. Today’s report:

Speakers Discuss COVID-19 Scams and How to Protect Yourself
Assembly member and Speaker pro Tem Kevin Mullin hosted a virtual scam stopper town hall on his Facebook page this morning to inform residents of COVID-19 scams and how to avoid them. Guest speakers included San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe and Jane Kreidler with the Contractors State License Board.

The speakers agreed that COVID-19 scammers are using the same approaches to trick people out of their money as in ordinary times.  Residents can protect themselves by following basic security precautions, including never share personal information, such as name, date of birth, credit card or bank information by phone, email or regular mail.  They also advise against making purchases through door-to-door sales.

Current scams include selling low cost face coverings, surgical masks and gloves, and COVID-19 cures.  Scammers also try to take advantage of our generosity during difficult times, so always confirm the validity of a charity before making donations.
