Tech and Tradition Merge at Grand Avenue Library

More than a century ago Rue Clifford rode a horse through the streets of South San Francisco to gather signatures to support building a library. Her work paid off: industrialist turned philanthropist Andrew Carnegie gave the young city $10,000 to build its first free public library on Grand Avenue. That same library has now completed a major renovation with funding assistance from the Measure K sales tax. History Comes to Life in San Bruno

The Board of Supervisors has allocated local Measure K sales tax funds to help a local nonprofit organization build a memorial so that current and future generations learn from the mistakes of the past. The Tanforan Memorial Assembly Committee is raising funds to build a memorial to the 8,000 Japanese Americans who were imprisoned at the former Tanforan horse racing track in San Bruno shortly after the outbreak of World War II. 150 Years of San Mateo County History Prepares for Move

Built in 1863, the Lathrop House in downtown Redwood City is one of the Peninsula's oldest and best-preserved homes. Now, after surviving two relocations, the 1906 earthquake and periods of neglect, the Lathrop House is being readied for its next chapter: a short move to a lot behind the San Mateo County History Museum at Marshall and Hamilton streets. Learn more.

Opening Doors and Opportunities

To help ensure elderly and disabled residents can get where they need to go, the Board of Supervisors has granted local sales tax funds (Measure K) to subsidize the Redi-Wheels paratransit service operated by the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans). The service helps residents like Burlingame's Sammi Riley shop, visit friends and perform volunteer work.

Open Data Portal and Public Wifi

The Board of Supervisors in August 2013 approved investing local sales tax funds to develop an Open Data portal and Performance Dashboards to enhance government transparency and accountability. The Board also approved building a network of free wifi access points to help close the digital divide in communities that lack high-speed Internet access.

North Fair Oaks Middlefield Road Redesign, Community Improvements

The Board of Supervisors approved a plan in July 2013 that called for extensive public outreach around the goals of redesigning and making safety improvements to Middlefield Road and to enhance the quality of life for all in the unincorporated North Fair Oaks neighborhood.
