REDWOOD CITY — The County of San Mateo has received the inaugural Government Partner Volunteer of the Year Award from Special Olympics Northern California, recognizing the County’s efforts to expand opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The honor was presented during the 2026 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games, where more than 1,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers gathered at Santa Clara University for three days of competition, celebration and community.

The Games kicked off with the Parade of Athletes and featured competitions in track and field, tennis, swimming and other sports, along with health screenings, nightly dances and other activities.

Supervisor Lisa Gauthier and County Executive Mike Callagy accepted the award on the County's behalf.

"We are grateful for the support of San Mateo County and we’re proud to honor them as the Special Olympics Northern California Government Partner Volunteer of the Year," said David Solo, president and CEO of Special Olympics Northern California. "The County's commitment is crucial to help us uplift and inspire individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through the power of sports."

In November 2024, the Board of Supervisors approved $750,000 in Measure K funding over three years to help Special Olympics Northern California expand its programs locally.

Measure K funding supports outreach to schools and recreation programs, the recruitment of athletes and volunteer coaches and transportation for participants who otherwise might not be able to attend competitions and other events.

Special Olympics Northern California said the award recognizes the County's partnership and investment in helping more people with intellectual and developmental disabilities participate in sports while strengthening the network of coaches and volunteers who make the Games possible.

"San Mateo County has long been a proud supporter of Special Olympics and the incredible work they do in our community," Supervisor Gauthier said. "I was honored to attend the recent event and accept the Government Partner Volunteer of the Year Award on behalf of the County. One of my favorite moments was seeing everyone dancing, celebrating and simply having a great time together. It was such a joyful reminder of the sense of community and belonging Special Olympics creates."
