REDWOOD CITY – The public and media are invited to a flag-raising ceremony honoring Purple Heart recipients at County Center on Friday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m.
The ceremony will recognize the courage, service and sacrifice of members of the United States Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed in combat.
Purple Heart recipients are expected to attend San Mateo County’s first ceremony, which will include a Sheriff’s Office honor guard presentation.
“More than two centuries after George Washington created what became the Purple Heart, the medal remains one of our nation’s most meaningful symbols of courage and sacrifice,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller. “Behind every Purple Heart is a service member whose life was forever changed in defense of our country. On Purple Heart Day, we honor their service, recognize their sacrifices and affirm our commitment to ensuring their stories are never forgotten.”
The ceremony will take place ahead of the Board of Supervisors’ expected proclamation on Tuesday, Aug. 11, that will recognize Purple Heart Day in San Mateo County. The proclamation is co-sponsored by Supervisor Ray Mueller and Supervisor Lisa Gauthier.
“Purple Heart recipients are our neighbors, friends, and community members. Some carry visible reminders of the injuries they sustained in service to our nation, while others carry challenges not so easily seen,” Supervisor Gauthier said. “This ceremony is an opportunity for us to recognize all Purple Heart recipients, honor their stories and express our gratitude to these remarkable individuals and their families.”
The Purple Heart traces its origins to the Badge of Military Merit, established by General George Washington on Aug. 7, 1782. Today, the Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action.
