Folk Art from Alabama & Gee’s Bend, in partnership with SM County Office of Education’s Third Annual Arts Institute, sponsored by ClassXoom and Emanuel Law Group.
We’ll learn about folk art that derived from the isolation and segregation of African Americans in a small rural community. The quilts produced in Gee’s Bend, part of the Black Belt of Alabama, have become one of the most important contributions of African American art in the United States. Professor Sheri Schumacher will speak along with a Gee’s Bend quilter and member of the Pettway family of quilters.
