On May 1, 2000, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) signed a 10-year Moving to Work (MTW) Agreement with the Housing Authority of the County of San Mateo (HACSM). Subsequently, the MTW agreement was extended through 2028. The MTW demonstration provides HACSM more flexibility and authorization to develop policies that are outside the limitations of certain HUD regulations and enhances HACSM’s ability to serve the housing needs of low-income individuals and families in San Mateo County.

More than $4 million is being granted to four northern San Mateo County school districts to raise literacy rates of hundreds of young students through expanded preschool offerings. The grants announced Wednesday, May 27, are part of a larger effort called the Big Lift, which has collected $28 million with an aim to replicate the initial effort elsewhere in the county.

Supervisor Carole Groom will serve as president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 2015. Eighteen San Mateo County teachers received $31,000 in innovation awards from the county fund for projects designed to teach science, technology, engineering and math skills. The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to change the definition of "smoking" and "tobacco product" to include electronic smoking devices. The Board also voted 4-1 Tuesday to approve an ordinance prohibiting smoking of all types in and around unincorporated multi-unit residences, which include owner-occupied condominiums and townhouses.
Smoking inside apartments and condominiums in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County would become a thing of the past under a proposed ban coming before the Board of Supervisors Tuesday. Twin proposals by supervisors Carole Groom and Adrienne Tissier will first amend the definitions of “smoking” and “tobacco product” to include electronic devices and then add a section to county code prohibiting smoking of all types in and around multi-unit residences.
