PROJECT SUMMARY

DISTRICT 4 (Supervisor Warren Slocum) FY 2016-17 Measure K Request: One-Time Grant of $60,000 to Nuestra Casa

The Nuestra Casa’s Parent and Youth Academy (“Academy”) will strengthen family engagement by supporting parents and caregivers to be more involved and effective in the lives of their children. By providing training and resources that are rooted in the cultural strengths of East Palo Alto’s rich diversity, Nuestra Casa will provide meaningful community engagement for youth and families, and improve youth opportunities for success within East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park.

The Academy will serve 60 parents comprised of 3 groups of 20, with each group learning parenting and personal development skills within the cultural context of their respective communities.

The Academy will target parents of middle school youth. Workshops will be designed to meet parent needs. During the parent workshops, the children of the families will also  be engaged in activities that promote character development, community service, and academic success.

The $60,000 requested in district-specific Measure K funds will be used for 60 families and 25 youth to go through the organization’s six-week Parent and Youth Academy in spring 2017.

Perform​ance Measures:

·         60 adults and 25 youth participate in and complete the Academy

·         At least 90% of the participants indicate (in a survey) that the Academy strengthened their parenting skills

·         At least 90% of the participants indicate that they would recommend the Academy to another parent

Total One-Time Meas​ure K Request: Not to Exceed $60,000

The release of funds will be contingent on the execution of a grant agreement providing for the County’s confirmation of the expenditure of funds for the purposes stated herein.
