  • Redwood City — San Mateo County supervisors will begin three days of public hearings Monday on the 2025-26 Recommended Budget, a $4.9 billion spending plan that funds essential services and programs benefiting the county’s most vulnerable residents.

Hearings begin at 9 a.m. Monday, June 23, in the Board Chambers on the first floor of 500 County Center in downtown Redwood City. Sessions will continue at 9 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. (Google map link to 500 County Center)

Following public comment, County Executive Officer Mike Callagy will present an overview of the budget, the financial engine that powers an organization serving nearly everyone who lives, works or visits San Mateo County.

Callagy released a balanced, $4.9 billion budget on May 23 that prioritizes vital services while addressing ongoing financial challenges.

These challenges include slowing tax revenues, rising costs and uncertainties both about the economy and potential changes to federally funded programs that serve thousands of vulnerable residents: Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Temporary Aid to Needy Families programs, for example.

Hearings represent the first step in the County’s multi-phase budget process. As an arm of the state, and in accordance with California State law, the Board of Supervisors must adopt a Recommended Budget to ensure spending authority is in place by July 1.

If approved by the Board, the budget would undergo refinements until another round of budget hearings in September.
