Medical care

A medical examination provided by a licensed provider with specialized training can help ensure that a child is healthy and can assist with criminal and child welfare case investigations. All children who are suspected victims of sexual abuse are entitled to a medical evaluation. The examination is individualized to meet the needs of your child. It may include laboratory testing, x-rays, and appropriate medical treatments. The medical provider will explain the parts of the examination to you and your child, so that you and your child feel comfortable and safe throughout the entire examination.

Mental Health Support

Children who have experienced trauma may exhibit a variety of emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms. Connecting a child to the appropriate resources will support healing and resilience. These symptoms can manifest in different ways, depending on the child. Some common signs of trauma in children include anxiety, shame, nightmares, changes in appetite, aches or pains without a clear medical cause, or difficulty concentrating. Mental health professionals experienced in trauma care can provide specialized therapy for children, their siblings, and supportive adults. Since there is no single approach to therapy that works for everyone, the CAC team and your advocate will work closely with the child and their family to identify the right support. Your Victim Advocate can help schedule an appointment with a mental health professional if desired.

Your child’s experience will affect each member of your family; we can locate mental health support for supportive caregivers and siblings.
