In 2022, the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office established a key partnership with the Superior Court to form a countywide Gun Violence Prevention Program.  The Gun Violence Prevention (GVPP) includes personnel from the Superior Court, as well as two local law enforcement detectives who are the law enforcement branch of the GVPP.  The two local agency police detectives work under the supervision of the District Attorney’s Office.

The priorities of the GVPP relate to restraining orders and persons who become prohibited from possessing and/or owning firearms or firearm components due to restraining orders issued in San Mateo County.  Established goals of the GVPP include education for petitioners and respondents, increasing awareness and knowledge surrounding voluntary compliance, establishing protocols to increase voluntary firearm relinquishment, and quick law enforcement engagement with prohibited persons who do not comply with firearm compliance orders.

In the first several years of the program, the joint partnership between the Superior Court and the District Attorney’s Office has resulted in hundreds of firearms voluntarily turned over in compliance with valid restraining orders, as well as numerous firearms seized by our law enforcement team and partners when the respondents did not voluntarily comply.
