Did you know that 1 in 5 seniors live in poverty in this state? And that over 50% of households in this County experience rent burden – it’s even more acute for seniors.

It’s Affordable Housing Week – and today was a groundbreaking for the MidPen Housing Arroyo Greens Apartments in downtown Redwood City. This project, some 15 years in the making, will be transformational – providing 117 units of affordable senior housing (10 units set aside for veterans; 6 for seniors with acute mental illness) and a childcare center for 70 children. This inter-generational component should be a model for all senior housing! I cannot wait for the ribbon-cutting and move-in day for our seniors in about a year and a half!

It takes a village to make a project like this come to fruition - and a hardy "community" thanks to all who had a hand here, including: County of San Mateo, City of Redwood City, MidPen Housing, Union Bank, Federal Home Loan Bank Of San Francisco, Footsteps Child Care, Inc., Ian Alan Bain, Dahlin Group Architecture Planning, Devcon Construction, County of San Mateo - Department of Housing, Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County and so many others.
