Grapevines Sold at Costco May Be Infested with Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter
Background
Hundreds of grape plants infested with glassy-winged sharpshooter egg masses, nymphs, and adults were shipped to Costco stores across Northern California in April and May 2026. These infested plants were sold to customers and residents of San Mateo County between April 21 and May 22. However, glassy-winged sharpshooter is an invasive pest that threatens California agriculture if it were to establish populations across the state. Our department urgently needs your help to prevent the spread of this invasive species.
Instructions for San Mateo County Residents
Please contact our department immediately via phone (650-363-4700) or email (agpest@smcgov.org) if you are a San Mateo County resident who has bought grape plants from Costco between April 21, 2026 and May 22, 2026. The potentially infested plants are labeled "Growers Pride" or "Burchell Nursery".
After contacting our department, people who purchased a grape plant from Costco should isolate the plant:
-
Keep the plant in its original pot or container and away from other plants.
-
Do not put the plant in the ground if you have not already done so.
-
If possible, place the plant(s) in two trash bags, one inside the other, and seal them closed.
-
Do not return, transport or relocate the plant.
-
Do not place the plant in the trash or compost bin.
