Redwood City – The County of San Mateo continues to work to protect public health and safety in response to the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19.
The County of San Mateo’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains open to coordinate countywide response and communications in response to the situation. The EOC’s Joint Information Center will provide daily status reports Monday through Friday until further notice. Today’s report:
Board of Supervisors Issues Resolution Recognizing Community Heroes
Today’s Board of Supervisors meeting opened with recognition of those who have become heroes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Board members cited the “death-defying work” in addition to the level of dedication and compassion by many that can never be adequately repaid.
Through its resolution, the Board acknowledged that we often take for granted what can be considered an everyday job. Yet, in light of the pandemic and shelter in place orders, these jobs and those who fill them are indeed our heroes. The resolution listed janitors, grocery store workers, truck drivers and utility workers along with doctors, nurses, EMT’s, hospital workers, medical personnel, police and fire fighters.

SMC Strong Begins Taking Nonprofit Emergency Grant Applications May 6
The San Mateo County Strong Fund seeks to minimize the impact the Shelter in Place Order to curtail the spread of COVID-19 has had on the community. This includes local nonprofit organizations as they work to meet a surge in demand for services.
At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, the San Mateo County Strong Fund will activate a web portal to accept grant applications from local nonprofits whose organizational activities or everyday operations have been impacted by COVID-19. Applications will not be available prior to 8 a.m. The maximum amount of funding that can be awarded is $20,000 per organization and is subject to the availability of funds. Funding can be requested to cover expenses related to the shift organizations have made to continue operations, including purchases of health and hygiene supplies, technology upgrades and purchases, and costs related to necessary operational and staffing changes.
Applications will be accepted until the receipt of 250 applications or on Monday, May 11, 2020 at 5 p.m., whichever comes first.
The County of San Mateo, in partnership with Silicon Valley Community Foundation and San Mateo County Economic Development Association, has created the San Mateo County Strong Fund.
