Redwood City —  With measles on the rise nationally, and recent cases locally, San Mateo County Health joins Bay Area health officials in urging everyone to be up to date on measles vaccinations and to watch for symptoms after travel or exposure. The best protection against measles is two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which protects you for life. This is particularly important for anyone travelling internationally in the upcoming months.

Note: This is a revised version posted at 5 p.m. Redwood City – The state has awarded $42.8 million to spur development of three local affordable housing projects, including coastal apartments reserved for farmworkers and their families. The funds will go to helping build a total of 212 units for residents with low incomes in projects in Daly City, Burlingame and Moss Beach, where 18 new apartments will be dedicated for farmworkers.

Half Moon Bay – The County of San Mateo today announced the launch of a task force that is committed to improving the living conditions of farmworkers who reside in employer-provided housing. The task force will ensure compliance with local and state rules and regulations that affect the health and safety of employer-providing housing for farmworkers and their families.

I joined the Veterans Commission to deliver gifts to Haven Family House. But, that is not all I am doing to help homeless families.  

The federal government has continued to increase the extent of immigration enforcement in San Mateo County, continuing a trend of more immigrant residents of the County being placed in removal proceedings before the Executive Office for Immigration Review.  Many immigrants in such proceedings lack the resources to secure legal representation in such proceedings. 

There is no place like home.  And even when the place your family calls home is substandard, when you are about to be displaced because where you live is being sold, it is unsettling. Redwood Trailer Village was such a place.  

Multiple accounts have surfaced regarding the conditions of detained families along the U.S. and Mexico border, but Professor Bill Ong Hing's detailed testimonial from his visit to the border patrol processing facility in Clint, Texas has truly highlighted the dire conditions in which these children are being held in as well as the urgency for services and resources for our immigrant community. 

As reported by various news sources, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to initiate nationwide raids this weekend.  The Office of Community Affairs encourages everyone to become aware of their rights and to share important resources with everyone in the community.  

With support from the Board of Supervisors, all County staff now have access to interpretation services for over 200 unique languages. Residents can visit any County department and be helped with the language of their choice. Look for a language idenitification card or ask for interpretation services. The new service is easy, quick and efficient!
