Redwood City – Preparing your family for the worst that can happen sounds like a depressing way to spend a day. No, we can’t stop an earthquake or a tsunami. But we can anticipate and prepare for any number of calamities that may strike while we are at home, at the office, on the road or in school.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 Barbara Hammerman Award, an annual recognition sponsored by the San Mateo County Domestic Violence Council. In 2005, the Domestic Violence Council established the Hammerman Award, ratified by the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County, for the purpose of recognizing outstanding law enforcement officers for their contribution and service to survivors of domestic violence and their children. In 2009 the award was expanded to include professionals who provide services to victims of domestic violence.

Redwood City – The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for much of the Bay Area this weekend, including southern San Mateo County. And while much of the county is unlikely to see triple digits, this first heat wave of 2023 is a good time for a refresher on safety tips and ways to identify the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Redwood City – In a unanimous vote, San Mateo County supervisors agreed Tuesday to provide current and former foster youth ages 18 up to 22 with $1,000 a month in the County’s first guaranteed income program. About 70 eligible young adults will receive a direct deposit for up to 18 months.

Redwood City – San Mateo County Supervisors will consider confirming Claire Cunningham as the next director of the Human Services Agency, the department at the center of the County’s efforts to achieve functional zero homelessness.

Redwood City – The Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting July 10 to learn about tenant issues in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County and potential new protections to help prevent homelessness, sanction harassment of tenants and aid those with criminal records in finding housing.
