Volunteering

The SMCFD Volunteer Firefighter is located at Loma Mar Fire Station 55 . Loma Mar Volunteer Fire Company 55 was established in June 1974 and is made up completely of volunteer firefighters from the community. Their response area covers the town of Loma Mar and surrounding areas including miles of hiking trails and open space.

Loma Mar Company 55 is always looking for volunteer firefighters. San Mateo County Fire Department, in cooperation with CAL FIRE, train volunteer firefighters on a rotating basis as space and needs allow, usually once per year.

The minimum requirements to apply are:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a valid CA class C driver license.
  • Live within the service boundaries of the Loma Mar Company 55 response area
  • Submit a completed application.
  • Successfully pass a DMV and criminal background investigation.
  • Successfully pass a medical exam.

Additionally, pursuant to San Mateo County Resolution No. 069569 Memorandum of Understanding, the San Mateo County Fire Department oversees supports of La Honda Volunteer Fire Brigade and Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, two independent fire companies who provide volunteer fire protection and emergency response services in San Mateo County Fire Department jurisdiction.

Highlands CERT

The Highlands Community Response Team (CERT) is part of a national program that trains the public in basic disaster preparedness, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

 San Mateo County Fire Department personnel assist in management of the Highlands program and provide free basic emergency preparedness training program, advanced CERT courses, refresher courses, and special topic presentations. Specialized Highlands CERT tools and equipment are stored at Fire Station 17 in the San Mateo Highlands community.
