Overview

Road maintenance staff in the San Mateo County Department of Public Works Road Services Division perform a variety of essential tasks to keep the county’s 316 centerline miles of roadways and infrastructures safe and functional. Daily, they inspect roads and bridges for any signs of wear, damage, or safety hazards. They repair potholes, cracks, and other surface defects, ensuring safe driving conditions.

Workers also clear debris, trim vegetation, and address drainage issues to prevent flooding. In addition, they maintain traffic signs and road markings, ensuring they remain visible and in good condition.

Their work often involves using heavy machinery, such as graders, loaders, excavators and dump trucks to complete these tasks. Overall, their efforts are critical to maintaining the infrastructure that supports both the daily commute and public safety in the county-maintained road system. Road maintenance is separated in two geographical areas :

  • Bayside - County unincorporated areas east of Hwy 35
  • Coastside - County unincorporated areas west of Hwy 35
