Mother's Day spending expected to reach $34.1 billion
May 4, 2025
  • Reset how you show your appreciation to that awesome mother in your life. The National Retail Federation estimates spending for Mother's Day to reach over $34 billion! What if your gift this year was a donation in a mother's name you wish to appreciate?

The Commission on the Status of Women invites you to use your dollar power toward a donation to a local organization! You can support local resources by donating to organizations that help mothers and families in San Mateo County. Consider donating to organizations that provide food, shelter, and other essential resources to low-income families. You can also support local businesses by purchasing gift cards.

    Local Charities to Consider:
    • Food Banks: Food banks and pantries in San Mateo County can provide food assistance to families in need. The largest provider here is Second Harvest Food Bank.
    • Shelters for Women and Children: Shelters offer safe housing and support services for women and children experiencing homelessness. Communities Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA) provide housing assistance for survivors of intimate partner abuse.
    • Childcare Organizations: Organizations that provide affordable childcare can support working mothers and families. Build Up SMC, Child Care Coordinating Council (4C’s)
    • Local Nonprofits: Support nonprofits that work to improve the lives of children and families in your community. Please consider donating to any of San Mateo County Core Service Agencies such as Coastside Hope, Samaritan House or Daly City Community Services Center.
    • Small Businesses: Give a gift card to a local business to help support their community. Look at our list of San Mateo County women-owned businesses organized by city.

    Additional Ideas:
    • Fundraise: Host a fundraiser in collaboration with a local business, such as a meal kit sale or a paint night, and donate a portion of the proceeds to a chosen charity.
    • Donate to a specific cause: Consider focusing your donation on a specific cause, such as providing diapers to families in need or supporting domestic violence prevention.
    • Volunteer: Volunteer your time to a local charity during Mother's Day weekend to support their efforts.

Thank you for contributing toward a more safe, inclusive San Mateo County with your celebration of Mother's Day this weekend. Just remember, you can donate any time of the year but when it comes to a special occasion, it's unique opportunity to honor the women, mothers and daughters in your lives.
