Removing or planting a tree located in the right-of-way of San Mateo County's unincorporated districts requires a permit from the Department of Public Works. Beginning October 15, 2021 the Department of Public Works will allow the planting of trees and other softscape within a portion of the county right of way provided that the property owner agrees to maintain these softscape improvements at no cost to the county. Note that hardscape improvements (such as pavers, boulders, or structures) are still not allowed within the right of way.

- Planting of New Trees in county Right of Way - $127 plus additional fees for the Maintenance Agreement and recording fees.
Trees, including the trees that are adjacent to the public roads, are an important asset to residential, business and rural communities.
