Removing or planting a tree located in the right-of-way of San Mateo County's unincorporated districts requires a permit from the Department of Public Works. Beginning October 15, 2021 the Department of Public Works will allow the planting of trees and other softscape within a portion of the county right of way provided that the property owner agrees to maintain these softscape improvements at no cost to the county. Note that hardscape improvements (such as pavers, boulders, or structures) are still not allowed within the right of way.
 

Permit Fees

  • Removal of Trees in county maintained Right of Way - $134
  • Removal of Trees in county non maintained Right of Way - $13
  • Planting of New Trees in county Right of Way - $134 plus additional fees for the Maintenance Agreement and recording fees.
