Signage Replacement Program

The County of San Mateo Signage Replacement Program is centered on upgrading, repairing and replacing street name and traffic signs that are damaged, faded or missing within the unincorporated areas of the County. This program ensures that all signs within the unincorporated areas comply with current California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards and maintains the retro-reflectivity required for optimal visibility. 

Types of Signs

Regulatory - Regulatory signs advise drivers of the traffic laws and regulations. Regulatory signs typically have a white background with black or red lettering. Some examples of regulatory signs are Stop signs, Speed Limit signs, and No Parking signs.

Advisory - Advisory signs alert drivers over situations on the road that may be unexpected. Advisory signs have a yellow background with black lettering. Some examples of advisory/warning signs are Stop Ahead signs, Pedestrian Crossing signs, Deer Crossing signs and No Outlet signs. 

School Zone - School zone signs alert drivers that they are entering a school zone with active pedestrian areas. School zone signs are generally a bright fluorescent yellow green with black lettering.  

Street Name - Street name signs are posted along the road or at intersections that help drivers identify the name of the road. The County's standard for street name signs are a white boarder with a green background and white lettering.
