Redwood City, Calif. – The County of San Mateo continues to work to protect public health and safety in response to the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19.
The County of San Mateo’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) remains open to coordinate countywide response and communications in response to the situation. The EOC’s Joint Information Center will provide daily status reports Monday through Friday until further notice. Today’s report:
San Mateo County Campuses Remain Closed for Rest of 2020 School Year
Today, San Mateo County, in coordination with the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and Santa Clara, announced the extension of campus closures through the end of the 2020 school year.
The Bay Area county superintendents, in consultation with the public health officers in six Bay Area counties, acted following statements by Gov. Gavin Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond that suggested it unlikely that California students would be able to return to campuses for the current school year.
Teachers continue to instruct students via at-home and distance learning. School facilities will continue to be used to distribute school meals and provide childcare or supervision as determined by local needs.

San Mateo County Strong Donations Grow
Today the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors received information about the San Mateo County (SMC) Strong Fund from Deputy County Manager Peggy Jensen and San Mateo County Economic Development Association (SAMCEDA) President & CEO Rosanne Foust.
The fund was established to meet the needs of families and individuals, small local businesses, and non-profits economically impacted by the coronavirus outbreak and statewide COVID-19 Shelter in Place order.
In addition to the $3 million in voter-approved Measure K funds approved by the Board on March 24, SMC Strong has received 565 individual donations as of April 6, totaling $150,000. Donation amounts have ranged from $5 to $10,000.
Business pledges to SMC Strong through the Silicon Valley Community Foundation include: Google ($50,000), Comcast ($20,000), AT&T ($20,000), PG&E ($15,000), Franklin Templeton ($10,000), Millbrae Community Foundation ($10,000), Chambers of Commerce ($4,000), Heritage Bank ($3,000), and Provident Credit Union ($2,500).
San Mateo County Strong is partnering with the San Mateo Credit Union (SMCU) to facilitate small business assistance grants through an online application process in accordance with criteria outlined for qualifying small businesses.
"The County's partnership with SMCU allows us to leverage the dollars raised through the fund as far and wide as possible with their help in layering federal and state resources," said Foust. "We may not be able to save every small business in San Mateo County, but our goal is to help as many as we can."
