  • During our Board meeting on February 27th, I honored Life Scout Matthew Mariani for his Eagle Scout project.

Last year, Matthew began the planning of his Eagle Scout project, and along the way sought the counsel and advice of our Veterans Commission. His project was to fill backpacks with food, toiletries and warm clothing and distribute them to veterans in need. Simple enough. However, the end result of Matthew's project would provide 168 backpacks (distributed to the VA in Palo Alto and our own Human Services Agency), raising some $8,000 and the coordination of 200 volunteers!

Matthew's mother shared with us that he spoke at six masses about his project and the money needed. Along the way, he heard many personal stories from veterans. His work has sent a powerful message that community cares about our veterans in need!

Matthew is a sophomore at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco and resides in Burlingame. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 101.
