  • Redwood City – Supervisors Jackie Speier and Lisa Gauthier will take their listening tour on the child care crisis in San Mateo County to East Palo Alto on Wednesday, August 27 at 6:30pm. They are inviting parents, guardians and child care providers to their second town hall at the EPACENTER to hear from them directly about the issues they are facing.

“It comes as no surprise to parents in San Mateo County that the Wall Street Journal this week listed our county as the fifth most expensive county for five years of daycare up to kindergarten with a median cost of $128,215,” Supervisor Speier said. “In our town halls we are hearing from those parents. At our first one, we heard from a mother of infant twins who couldn’t find spots for both of them together. She ended up cutting her work hours in half to take care of her twins. We have a workforce crisis that starts in the crib.”

“Parents and child care providers—many of whom are women of color— face significant struggles, including high costs, low subsidy rates and limited support. We, as a community, need to do better for those parents who seek child care and those who parents trust to provide that care,” said Supervisor Lisa Gauthier.

The town hall will be child friendly with a kids’ corner for children aged 1 year and older. Translation services will be available in Spanish.
