Description

This project address the pedestrian access along Birchwood/Cedarwood avenues near Northwest Avenue. Currently no defined pedestrian path exists on the south side of Cedarwood Avenue to Northwest Avenue and the access to the adjacent business does not meet current standards. Sidewalk installation will remedy both of these issues. To provide safe pedestrian routes and connectivity to Squalicum Parkway, a trail is also proposed. Funding comes from Transportation Benefit District #1.

The work to be done consists, in general, of removal of narrow, uneven sidewalks on Semicircular Road, widening sidewalks from 4 feet to 6.5 feet on both sides of the street, and installing ADA compliant curb returns. On the south side of Semicircular Road the existing sidewalk will be sawcut at the back of curb and a new wider curb, gutter and sidewalk will be installed.  Where existing sidewalks meet ADA requirements, spot repairs of failing areas of existing sidewalks will take place. In addition to the concrete work, the roadway will be planed 6 feet wide at areas where new concrete sidewalks are being installed. The project will also install signal loop detectors tuned to bicycle weight at four intersections. Loop detectors will be installed in all directions at: Fifth Avenue and Waverly Avenue, at Middlefield Road and Fifth Avenue, and at the three-way intersection at Middlefield Road, Semicircular Road and 8th Avenue. Loop detectors will be installed at three directions (Northbound, Eastbound, and Westbound) at Semicircular Road and Fifth Avenue as well as any other items and details not mentioned above, but required by the Project Plans, Standard Specifications and these Special Provisions, and the directions of the Engineer.
