San Mateo County's Transgender Policy Approved

The County of San Mateo has developed and adopted a new Transgender Policy for its employees.  This policy was unanimously approved and supported by the County Board of Supervisors at its February 12 meeting.  This Transgender Policy reaffirms the County’s commitment to providing a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for all employees.

San Mateo County LGBTQ Commission Release First Community Wellness Assessment In 15 Years

Redwood City - Today, the San Mateo County LGBTQ Commission presented the first wellness assessment in 15 years of LGBTQ community members of San Mateo County to the Board of Supervisors. The assessment, conducted in collaboration with Public Health, Policy and Planning, a division of San Mateo County Health, sought to evaluate the attitudes of the County’s LGBTQ residents by deploying online needs assessment surveys in 2017, including different versions for adults and for youth.

Helping build a place everyone can call home

Home matters – during the holidays, perhaps even more so. To paraphrase Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, we all know there is no place like home. And home and health are related – long commutes create pollution and mean time away from family.

Connect 18 Conference

In November 2018, I was proud to co-host our sixth annual Connect Conference. This year’s Connect 18 theme was, “Transforming Communities Through Technology” which was held at Facebook in Menlo Park. Assemblyman Kevin Mullin, Assemblyman Marc Berman, and President and CEO of SAMCEDA, Rosanne Foust, and I were pleased to welcome a roster of distinguished speakers who shared their ideas, stories, passions and best practices for using disruptive technologies to transform our communities.

As a proud Vietnam Veteran, the celebration of Veterans Day has so much meaning and that’s why I was proud to present a proclamation, during our November 6 Board of Supervisors meeting, designating November 11, 2018 as the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I.

In his own words, John Maltbie noted that what we do as a County matters.

Community Conversations: Mental Health and Families

Last night we held our second Community Conversation on mental health and families and over 60 community members attended to discuss the triggers of mental illness. With the pressure of our current immigration system, the housing crisis, and the high cost of living we are seeing an alarming impact on our family’s mental health.
