On May 1, 2000, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) signed a 10-year Moving to Work (MTW) Agreement with the Housing Authority of the County of San Mateo (HACSM). Subsequently, the MTW agreement was extended through 2028.  The MTW demonstration provides HACSM more flexibility and authorization to develop policies that are outside the limitations of certain HUD regulations and enhances HACSM’s ability to serve the housing needs of low-income individuals and families in San Mateo County.

Today, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors appointed Lisa Rosenberg of Menlo Park to the honorary post of Poet Laureate. Her role as Poet Laureate will be to elevate poetry among San Mateo County residents and to celebrate the literary arts.

San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum has been appointed to the Association of Bay Area Government’s (ABAG) new Strategy Committee. The work of this Committee will guide the development of a regional Economic Development District (EDD) for the nine-county Bay Area and support regional economic prosperity.

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Warren Slocum in partnership with the American Medical Response (AMR) will be launching the “Save A Life” Scholarship Program at the 5th Annual OYE Latino Youth Conference on May 21, 2016, at Canada College. The program will offer two full-ride scholarships to attend the College of San Mateo’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Training Program and provide a mentor to help complete the EMT Program.

As part of Cities for Action, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors joins a broad coalition of cities and counties that are filing a friend-of-the-court amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. Texas today, urging the Court to overturn a lower court’s decision and allow President Obama’s executive action on immigration to move forward. The brief, signed by 118 cities and counties representing 35 states, argues that the nationwide injunction blocking implementation of the President’s executive action on immigration was erroneously entered and should be reversed because it places millions of families in our cities and counties at economic and personal risk. Locally, six Bay Area counties have signed on to the amicus brief, including San Francisco, Alameda, Marin, Santa Clara, Sonoma and San Mateo Counties along with the major municipalities of San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento.

The slowdown at the Port of Oakland is wreaking havoc on South Bay Recycling (SBR) in San Carlos, the contractor that provides recycling operations for the South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA). The slowdown at the Port of Oakland is due to a labor dispute between Pacific Maritime Association and the longshoremen (ILWU) who have been working without a contract since July 1. The result is a pileup of containers on the docks, a flotilla of container ships anchored in San Francisco Bay and a warehousing issue for SBR.

After months and months of public meetings and community outreach, more than 2500 people commented on the traffic design features that they hoped the planned undergrounding and redesign project would bring to the downtown area of North Fair Oaks.

Menlo Park Mayor Ray Mueller will welcome and join San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum for office hours in Menlo Park this Saturday, April 26th from 1:00-2:30 p.m. at Cafe Zoё located at 1929 Menalto Avenue.

As part of her duties as San Mateo County’s first Poet Laureate, Caroline Goodwin will open tomorrow’s Board of Supervisors’ meeting with a poetry reading and Supervisor Warren Slocum will present a proclamation to the Board of Supervisors naming April 2014 as National Poetry Month. Ms. Goodwin also plans to announce her poetry blog that can be read on the Poet Laureate website, www.sanmateocountypoet.org
