California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) detected seven oriental fruit flies (Bactrocera dorasalis) in Santa Clara County prompting a quarantine to be established in San Jose. Oriental fruit flies are an invasive pest native to southern Asia, that has become established in Hawaii. It is a pest to over 230 different kinds of fruit and vegetables threatening California’s $50 billion dollar agricultural industry. Residents within the quarantine zone are urged not to move homegrown fruit and vegetable off their property.
