  • Pharmaceutical

Pharmaceuticals flushed into the sanitary sewer system eventually end up in streams, creeks, rivers and reservoirs. To prevent unwanted toxins reaching our precious Bay water, pharmaceutical drop-off locations with dedicated containers provide a safer and more sensible option.

Nearly every law enforcement agency in San Mateo County participates in this convenient disposal program.

Participating cities offer supervised white metal containers dedicated to this type of dependable and confidential disposal.  When disposing please use this procedure

    • Remove excess packaging like boxes and bottles.
    • Consolidate pills in a ziplock bag or tied off bag.
    • Leave liquid medications in original containers.

    Sharps Disposal Program

State Law prohibits the disposal of used home-generated syringes and other medical sharps in the regular trash or recycling containers. This type of hazardous waste requires separate processing. Medical health care providers such as Kaiser, Peninsula Hospital and Seton Medical Center offer programs for their patients. Please contact them directly to find out availability for disposal at their locations.
