Assembly Member Kevin Mullin and I are excited to co-host a daylong conference entitled Connect13: Strengthening Communities through Social Media on October 23rd at the YouTube Headquarters in San Bruno. We have a fascinating line-up of speakers from the Altimeter Group, Google, YouTube, Facebook, Draper University and Code for America who will talk about the strategies, nuts and bolts, and legal issues around the use of social media applications for civic engagement. We will also hear from local government leaders who are using social media effectively and students who have designed apps through science initiatives in their schools.This will be an interesting day - and one we hope to repeat - year after year! This year's conference (the first of its kind in San Mateo County) was designed by and for elected, appointed and community leaders and drawing on the talent that surrounds us here in the heart of Silicon Valley.
