  • On June 23rd, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors appointed Acting Sheriff Carlos Bolanos as Sheriff to finish out the two years remaining in the term of former Sheriff Greg Munks who stepped down for health reasons. The Board of Supervisors is grateful to have seasoned leadership in the ranks of our law enforcement and the department is fortunate to have a team of professionals that have worked closely together for several years. The County and its cities are in good hands.

Acting Sheriff Bolanos, former Undersheriff to Sheriff Greg Munks, brings leadership strength, stability, and a full measure of goodwill from his 37 years of law enforcement experience on the Peninsula.  He began his career in the Palo Alto Police Department; following that beginning he served as Chief of Police for the City of Redwood City and was credited with integrating a community-oriented policing philosophy. Munks invited Bolanos to serve as Undersheriff when he was elected in 2008.

Bolanos has a BA in economics from the University of San Francisco and a Masters of Public Administration from California State University, East Bay. He is also a graduate of Command College and the Homeland Security Executive Leaders Program.
