  • In October of 2014, our Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance to regulate smoking in multi-family dwellings in the unincorporated areas of San Mateo County. We sincerely hope to improve the health of the residents in the County.

As of January 1, 2016, smoking is now illegal inside the owned, leased or rented units, inside the common areas (both inside and outside) and within 30 feet of any doorways, windows, openings and ventilation systems. This smoking ban includes tobacco, vaping products, and marijuana, if not legally prescribed for medical purposes.

Although universal "no smoking" signs should be posted outside of all multi-family residences, even if the signs are not present, the ordinance is still in effect (and so are the penalities). In addition, it is unlawful to intimidate or harass anyone who tries to encourage the enforcement of this ordinance. Further, causing, permitting, aiding or abetting a vioation of the smoking ordinance is also a violation.

I want to thank the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) for their advocacy in the passage of this ordinance. Their research, their passion, and their desire to make the North Fair Oaks community a healthier place for all residents helped the enactment of this ordinance.
