Immigrant Integration Summit

I am very proud to be convening and co-sponsoring the first ever Immigrant Integration Summit at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. It's designed for elected and business leaders.

According to the research conducted by the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, San Mateo County is one of the most “immigrant rich” areas in California. As of 2010, it ranked fourth among counties in California and eighth in the nation in the concentration of foreign-born residents. From 2000 and 2010 San Mateo County’s immigrant population increased more than any other county in California. Our foreign-born residents make up more than 33 percent of the population in San Mateo County--and they are diverse.

The purpose of this summit is to foster dialogue about the current challenges immigrants face in San Mateo County. We will hear stories from our immigrant residents, learn about the work being done for immigrant integration at the local, state and federal levels, and hear about innovative programs which support immigrants. Our goal is to create a master plan to meet the needs of our immigrant population here in San Mateo County.

Creating the Office of Immigrant Support and Coordination was the first step, this is a building step to raise awareness and strengthen our community.
