SAN MATEO - Supervisor Carole Groom celebrated the renovation of the 110-year-old Vendome Hotel in downtown San Mateo on May 12, 2009, in the thick of the Housing Leadership Councils' Affordable Housing Week.

The renovated hotel includes 15 units with two halls for men and women. The Vendome will be able to house the homeless that have been considered long-term downtown San Mateo residents, without addresses. The Vendome Hotel is located at Second Avenue and Claremont Street, and purchased by the City of San Mateo in 2007. The renovation was approved shortly thereafter and paid for with special grants and San Mateo's Redevelopment Agency. The renovations include a bedroom for an onsite supervisor and space for counselors.

Supervisor Groom was very involved with the Vendome purchase and renovation during her term on the City Council and expressed her pride with the long-awaited re-opening of the Vendome.
