  • Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Assemblyman Rich Gordon and San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine invite members of the public to attend the “Meeting the Challenges of Sea Level Rise in San Mateo County” conference on Monday, December 9, 2013, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the College of San Mateo Theater, Building 3, 1700 W. Hillsdale Blvd in San Mateo.

The conference will feature keynote speaker John Englander, nationally acclaimed author of “High Tide on Main Street”, as well as federal, state and local perspectives from Congresswoman Jackie Speier, Assemblyman Rich Gordon and San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine.

Speier stated, “San Mateo County is the county in our region most likely to be impacted by rising tides. We already saw king tides reaching the edges of the Bayshore near Redwood City, and this is just the beginning. The airport and other areas will also be profoundly impacted. We will all be called upon to preserve public infrastructure and the environment during very challenging times to come. Join this conference to get a snapshot of the future. ”

Gordon, who chairs the state Select Committee on Sea Level Rise & the California Economy, stated, “Actions from local, state, and federal agencies are needed to address the serious consequences of sea level rise. Monday’s conference evidences the commitment and cooperation between all levels of government to tackle this issue head-on.”

Pine stated, “Sea level rise is one of the most serious consequences of climate change and it will have a profound effect on San Mateo County which has more people and property at risk from the rising sea than any other Bay Area county.”

Representatives from federal, state and local agencies will present information on a variety of topics including global and local risks as well as potential adaptations and strategies for meeting the rising tides.
