John joined the County Attorney’s Office in 1995. In July 2006, John was promoted to the position of Chief Deputy County Attorney. In March 2011, John was appointed by the Board of Supervisors as County Attorney. In addition to representing the Board of Supervisors, John also represents the County Executive Officer and advises the Superior Court.
In the community, John serves on the Board of Directors for the County Counsels’ Association of California, as well as the State Bar Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation (JNE). John has also served on the Board of Trustees for the San Mateo Credit Union since 2008.
John’s past experience in the County Attorney’s Office includes substantial litigation of civil cases in state and federal court, and representation of the following County departments and outside agencies:

Upon graduation from law school in 1989, John was employed as a fellow with the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund Inc. (now Earthjustice). From 1990-1994, John was employed as an environmental litigator with the then Washington D.C. law firm of Carr, Goodson & Lee. In 1994, John moved to San Francisco where he worked as a senior associate practicing environmental litigation for the San Francisco offices of the law firm of Lane, Powell, Spears, Lubersky.
